Nasi Lemak Bamboo, Afzar Maju Corner, latest food craze, Kepong, Malaysia

Nasi Lemak, is national dish in Malaysia. It is a complete plate of meal by itself, as there are proteins (in the form of chicken, egg, anchovies and peanuts), carbohydrates (in the rice) and vegetables (in cucumber). Nasi lemak is our all time Malaysian Favourite, can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Of course, there are many other variants and versions according to the way of cooking the rice and the chicken. Well, today, I am going tell you about this latest craze or version of nasi lemak, the Bamboo Nasi Lemak or as locally called Nasi Lemak Bamboo!

I recently had this Nasi Lemak Bamboo at Azfar Maju Corner, at Bandar Menjalara, Kepong. A newly opened restaurant ( about 3 months), it was the brain child of Ms. Seema, who formerly worked in the medical field.

This Nasi lemak bamboo is different from others on the way it is cooked and also the flavors. The rice has a green color because it is cooked in pandan juices which makes it even more fragrant. According to Ms. Seema, the rice was cooked for 40 minutes in bamboo lined with coconut leaves. To maintain enough flavor in the rice, Ms. Seema use the measurement of one kilo of rice to one kilo of coconut milk. A little salt and other spices are also added. To maintain the consistency of this dish, Ms. Seema herself personally prepare this dish!

The chicken used here are kampung chicken, and it was slow cooked for 4 hours. No wonder this rendang chicken here has soft meat that are dropping from the bones! I can taste the various spices in the chicken as the spices are infused into the meat after cooking for such a long time. Here the rendang chicken is not too spicy which is suitable for all ages and races of our community. This rendang chicken is added into the bamboo rice during the last 3 minutes of steaming.

Two minutes before serving, the boiled egg, cucumber, peanuts and anchovies are added into the steamed bamboo so as to maintain the crunchiness of the fried anchovies and peanuts.

Please phone Pn. Seema to order as this Bamboo Nasi Lemak if you are going in a group as she prepares only about 25-30 a day.

For those with kids, there are other dishes are available, such as roti canai, roti cheese, naan, fried chicken and many others. Drinks are also available such as coffee, tea, ginger tea, and other drinks can be ordered here.

It was a busy and happy occasion when I was eating Nasi Lemak Bamboo here as a a group of students were celebrating birthday!
"Happy birthday to You! Wishing you all a successful and lucky years ahead!"
