Tut's Egyptian Eatery, Malaysia's first taste of Egypt at 1 Utama, PJ


Lunch, Dinner or Brunch, which cuisine do you want? Hmm... the normal answer would be Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Middle Eastern or local Malaysian? None would say Egyptian, why? Because there's no authentic Egyptian in Malaysia until recently on17 May, with Tut's Egyptian Eatery opening its doors in 1 Utama Shopping Mall. I received an invitation to the opening launch of Tut's Egyptian Eatery and was happy to be able to attend this food tasting event as I have never tasted Egyptian food before.



"Egypt is known for its ancient history and heritage. The origins of Egyptian cuisine is still well treasured till today. We believe that our authentic Egyptian cuisine prepared by Egyptian chefs does not compromise on flavour. What you will savour at Tut's will be exactly the same if you were fortunate to visit Egypt. Every dish is reflective of our commitment to bring the real taste of Egypt!" said Mohamed Zein, Tut's Business Development Manager.



At the launch, international celebrity chef, Chef Anis Nabilah, introduced the scrumptious delicacies of Tut's to the members of the media.







Tut's, gets its name from the famous King Tut Ankh Amoun. This restaurant is Pharaoh-themed.



The decor is modern with vibrant colours giving a cozy feel. Arrangements are such it is suitable for for families and friends to gather together to share a meal.



Tut's authentic signature delicacies include Koshari, Molokiah, Hawaoshi (succulent meat with signature seasonning wrapped in baked bread fold), Crispy Cleopatra Chicken, and classic signature desserts such as Om Ali Bread pudding and Sobya Mousse. The following are the details of some dishes.



Molokhia Minced Leaf Stew - RM9.90

A bowl minced leaf, green and buttery, from the look of it is very normal. Uniquely Egyptian, this special bowl of soup is made up of Molokhia leaves that are chopped and minced then cooked to perfection into a stew added with butter, garlic, and spices such as coriander, cumin and black pepper.


Hawaoshi Baked Meat Foldover (beef - RM17.90 / lamb - RM18.80)

I find this fold over different from others in the sense, first, the bread fold outside is baked fresh and texture is fluffy. Second there are generous amount of filling inside, especially the minced meat which is season with Tut's signature seasoning. To me, the lamb taste nicer than the beef, but to my friend, a beef lover, she said it is also just as good. Take it to a higher level by dipping it into their special Tahini dipping sauce. 

Koshari Mixed Grain Bowl - RM14.30

I like this main course of Koshari mixed grain rice as it is a healthy version of our normal white rice at home. Surprisingly, I find there are some pieces of pasta among the rice. Oh, next time I can also try this at home instead of just plain mixed grain rice as kids live pastas. There a lentils, onions and beans in the bowl all mixed with the rice. This is one dish that suits my palate. It is served with sides of tomato sauce, Tut's chilli sauce, chick peas, lentils and fried onions. 


Herbal Hot Plate Chicken with Baked Rice - RM25.90

This whole plate is baked in the oven. The chicken is slow grilled on a hot plate prepared with handpicked potatoes and peppers. Chicken is nice and succulent, juices are still contained inside and flavoured with herbs. There color strips of red, yellow and green bell peppers and potatoes grilled and mixed with their Egyptian herbs, but it is bit too oily for me. The rice is baked too, that's why it is very soft which makes us all guess whether it is glutinous rice. Upon confirmation with the  manager, it is just plain rice but baked with butter. I like the chicken here but not the soft shiny buttery rice. 


Om Ali Bread Pudding - RM9.80


Of the dessert served to us, I like this Om Ali Bread Pudding the most. The bread is well cooked with milk and raisins. This soft pudding is served with coconut flavoured or Melaka-flavoured Sangkaya ice cream. The chopped nuts does justice to this dessert by giving it the crunchiness. Me, being a person who is trying to cut down sugar, this is a bit to the sweeter side.


Roz b Laban Creamy Delight - RM6.85 

 Authentic Egyptian, this is a rice dessert and a baked dessert. A balance of flavor with the sweetness of milk and vanilla cooked and baked with the rice. Topped with berry and strawberry to balance the taste. Personally it tasted somewhat like the Indian pudding Kheer, (which I had in Dehli) but this has the berries on top. 


Sobya Milk - RM7.50

A unique drink from the land of Nile, this is a mixture of light milk and a hint of coconut that tickles your taste bud. Verdict? Not our regular type of drink and you have to like milky taste as well as the coconut water. To me it is ok but to the sweet side.  


Egyptian Lemon Mint - RM8.00

A refreshing drink made from cold milk, sour lemon, and sharp, sweet mint to beat the heat Egyptian way. I would highly recommend this drink as it is more suited to our local taste bud. By the way, just remind them to put less sugar when you order the drinks, just say "Kurang manis", similar to how we order from our mamak stall.

Egypt has been my next destination of travel, with the soaring pyramids, the magnificent temples, the labyrinth shopping souk amid the rich history, culture and heritage. Therefore, I would like to thank Tut's for the invitation to this launch and as I was able to taste authentic Egyptian cuisine for the first time. 


Diners can opt for ala-carte or choose from the many combo meals to sample a good variety of dishes. The food is indeed different from Middle Eastern, African or Mediterranean cuisine, so why not just go and give it a try!
